Father Joe Bernardo, a teacher and priest at Pius X High School, is under investigation following self-reported incidents of sexual misconduct. During a sabbatical this past winter, Father Bernardo sought inpatient counseling where he disclosed behaviors to his therapist that involved inappropriate contact with students.

The Diocese of Lincoln was informed after the therapist reported the misconduct to law enforcement, as required by mandatory reporting statutes. Father Bernardo admitted to intentionally making contact with male students in public areas at Pius X High School and taking unauthorized pictures of them. Additionally, he reportedly took photos in a public gym locker room not associated with the school.

Following these revelations, the Diocese placed Father Bernardo on administrative leave and suspended him from ministry duties. The Lincoln Police Department has launched an investigation into his actions. Authorities are urging anyone with information to reach out to Investigator Robert Norton at (402) 441-8294.

The Diocese is offering pastoral care and support for those affected by these events. For more information about available resources, individuals can contact Father Lawrence Stoley, Superintendent of Schools, at (402) 473-0616.

"We ask for your prayers for all affected by these events."
