St. Patrick Parish in Wichita faced extensive vandalism but managed to proceed with its scheduled masses over the weekend. According to Fr. Jorge Lopez, the parish pastor, while the damage seemed intended for destruction, it resulted in strengthening community bonds and increased prayer.

“At first, a lot of people were angry, asking why anyone would do that,” Fr. Lopez said. “But in the gospel, Jesus says we have to forgive and pray for our enemies, and that’s what I preached about at all our weekend Masses. God only knows what this individual is going through.”

Bishop Carl Kemme expressed his sadness over the incident and called on the faithful to support Fr. Lopez, Parochial Vicar Fr. Jesus Banuelos, and the St. Patrick community through prayer.

“It is always distressing when villains target houses of worship for their evil acts,” Bishop Kemme stated.

The police arrested a 23-year-old man from Saline County on suspicion of burglary and other charges related to the vandalism which included graffiti linked to an upcoming "Black Mass" event.

“The police investigators were very careful and thorough," noted Fr. Lopez regarding any possible connections with local events or celebrations.

Despite these challenges, St. Patrick Parish held all planned activities including a fundraising event with dinner and dance for parishioners and alumni as scheduled in their parish hall due to church damages.

Fr. Lopez mentioned that cleanup began immediately after Sunday morning Mass with five parishioners working extensively due to complex conditions following police investigations until late Saturday night.

“Even though people are upset," he continued, "so many people are now praying for this person’s conversion."

On Monday morning following the incident, insurance assessments were still pending; however, Fr. Lopez was optimistic about repairs noting their reliable insurance company.

As of Tuesday following March 17th weekend services resumed within the sanctuary which sustained damage yet remained functional as highlighted by Fr. Lopez's remarks emphasizing ongoing communal efforts: “This is a place of comfort for so many.”
