DePaul Art Museum in Chicago is set to unveil its spring exhibition, "Christina Fernandez: Multiple Exposures," showcasing the work of Los Angeles-based photographer Christina Fernandez. The exhibition will run from March 20 to August 3 at the museum on DePaul University's Lincoln Park Campus.

Laura-Caroline de Lara, director of DePaul Art Museum (DPAM), expressed enthusiasm for bringing Fernandez's work to a Chicago audience. She stated, “DePaul Art Museum is pleased to bring the work of Christina Fernandez to Chicago audiences this spring as a continuation of our commitment to highlighting Latinx stories in our exhibitions and programs.”

The retrospective highlights themes such as migration, labor, gender, and Mexican American identity through photography. It includes significant bodies of work by Fernandez that reflect experiences ranging from border-spanning family histories to contemporary laundromats. The artist also addresses the challenges and beauty inherent in her roles as an artist, professor, and mother.

The exhibition's title refers not only to a photographic technique but also to the unveiling of hidden aspects like racial histories and community exploitation. Curator Ionit Behar commented on Fernandez’s ability to weave complex narratives into her photography: “Christina Fernandez brilliantly weaves self-portraiture, family history, the built environment and broader Latinx narratives into her work.”

In addition to the exhibition itself, planned programs include an exhibition walkthrough with Fernandez and a workshop on self-portraiture as part of DPAM’s Family Day series. There will also be a panel discussion with local artists about Chicago Latinx photography and a podcast interview with Fernandez in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago.

The traveling exhibition is organized by UCR ARTS and curated by Joanna Szupinska from the California Museum of Photography. Chon Noriega serves as curatorial advisor. Ionit Behar organized DPAM's presentation of this exhibition. Support comes from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Teiger Foundation, and Vincentian Endowment Fund.

DePaul Art Museum is located at 935 W. Fullerton Ave., open Wednesday through Sunday with free admission for all visitors. Further details can be found on their website or by contacting them directly.
