Raised in Oakland, Tennessee, Alexis Murrell frequently visited Memphis but was unfamiliar with Christian Brothers University (CBU) until high school. Her perspective changed when Dr. Jennifer Weske invited her to an on-campus accounting camp at CBU.
“It was a weeklong stay, and we stayed in the LLC dorms,” Murrell said. “During that experience, we completed a series of accounting tasks and built our own business. I started to connect with the staff here.”
Murrell applied to CBU and joined the Class of 2025, finding it a suitable environment for personal growth. She noted, “The small campus really made it feel like home. It helped me to break out of my shell.”
Initially focused on accounting, an English course redirected her interests towards television journalism and writing books for children.
Beyond academics, Murrell is deeply involved in community service and serves as president of CBU's Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapter. Her commitment extends to helping children from lower-income households and women facing domestic violence.
“To me, community service means giving back to those who sometimes can’t give to themselves,” she stated.
As one of five seniors recognized as a Lasallian Fellow by CBU for embodying values set by St. John Baptist de La Salle, Murrell described this recognition as surreal: “I was so grateful because it means that I’ve done my servant’s task here.”
Her mother remains a significant influence in her life. “My mom has been everything to me my whole life,” Murrell shared.
Murrell also contributes as a resident assistant and leads the student activities council at CBU for the 2024-25 academic year.
Dr. Cynthia Alexander Mitchell praised her leadership qualities: “I am most impressed by the fact that Alexis is a natural leader who consistently operates with compassion and an undeniable sense of calling.”
