Samuel M. Thompson, an alumnus of The School of Education at St. John's University and currently the Assistant to the Superintendent for Administration in the Farmingdale School District, was honored with the Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award by the Town of Oyster Bay on January 7.
Thompson expressed his gratitude for receiving this award, stating, "Receiving the Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award is a profound honor because of the ideals and legacy it represents." He emphasized that Dr. King's values have influenced leadership principles over time and noted that being recognized as someone who embodies these values is both humbling and meaningful.
Reflecting on his educational journey, Thompson credited his teaching philosophy to foundational principles learned at St. John's University. He highlighted service leadership, collaborative learning, and belief in every child's potential as key aspects guiding him through educational challenges with a focus on student success.
Thompson shared experiences from his career, including initiatives during challenging times like the pandemic when he served as a building principal. He prioritized resilience and connection within his school community through video updates, drive-through events, and home visits to support students and families.
Additionally, Thompson recounted how he led outreach efforts following a bus accident in the Farmingdale community by providing resources and support to those affected. These actions underscored leadership through service in navigating adversity.
With over 29 years in education across various roles such as classroom teacher, athletic coach, department supervisor, building principal, assistant superintendent, and adjunct professor for graduate students in education administration, Thompson has mentored numerous students and teachers. He shared insights about embracing diversity with patience and innovation while maintaining a commitment to excellence.
