Every Catholic has a role in supporting the church's mission, Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre emphasized to the Louisville chapter of Young Catholic Professionals (YCP Louisville) on January 16. The event was part of the "Executive Speaker Series," held at the Overlook at St. Thomas.

Archbishop Fabre expressed his pleasure at seeing many young adults in attendance. “It’s a pleasure to be amongst many young people, young Catholic professionals, who are excited about, find meaning in and are adhering to their Catholic faith,” he said. “It fills my heart with great joy to witness the presence of all of you here tonight.”

He encouraged attendees to serve and volunteer within the church community. “It is crucial that you also become — or continue to become — more and more involved in the life of the church by offering your time, talent and expertise,” he stated.

The archbishop spoke about service being rooted in four "abilities to love": “love of self,” “love of others,” “love of a vision” and “love of God.” He explained that a healthy love for oneself allows individuals to see their contributions as significant. Christians with this mindset are invited by God to use their gifts for the church's mission.

“Love of others” involves placing one's gifts at the service of others and the church, particularly for those in need. The ability called "the love of a vision" pertains to sharing God's vision for humanity and advancing His kingdom on earth.

“This longing for the kingdom of God empowers us to volunteer, to serve the needs of the church as it strives to continue to advance the kingdom of God,” Archbishop Fabre noted.

Lastly, "Love of God" compels Christians toward service as an expression of their relationship with Jesus Christ.

During a Q&A session, one attendee asked about young people's roles in the church. Archbishop Fabre advised living out faith in workplaces: “Your role is best lived by bringing your faith to the workplace. We overlook that call."

Julia Hennessy found resonance with this message on workplace evangelization, aiming for authenticity rather than pushiness when witnessing her faith.

Ryan Stevens appreciated how timely and encouraging Archbishop Fabre's reflection was as they start a new year. A convert himself, Stevens feels increasingly confident about serving YCP Louisville as its director of outreach.

Ellie Crawford from YCP Louisville highlighted how well Archbishop Fabre's comments aligned with their mission—providing community support for Catholics living their faith professionally.

YCP Louisville offers regular events like speaker series and social gatherings open to individuals from any career background without parish affiliation. More information can be found at www.youngcatholicprofessionals.org/chapter/louisville or via info@ycplouisville.org.
