Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
During the Archdiocese of Louisville's annual Mass for Life on January 18, more than 370 attendees were urged to pray for public policies that align with Catholic teachings on the dignity of life. The event took place at St. Gabriel Church in Fern Creek and was led by Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre.
Father Jeffrey Nicolas, pastor of St. Bernadette Church, delivered the homily, emphasizing the responsibility of Catholics to be "faithful citizens who work together for our nation’s common good." He reflected on a Gospel story about Jesus healing a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath, highlighting the message: "Do good rather than evil; save life rather than destroy it."
Archbishop Fabre expressed his honor in welcoming attendees and prayed for respect for all human life through their efforts and prayers. Father Nicolas noted that prayer strengthens individuals in their mission to protect life's dignity.
The liturgy included participation from various groups such as the Knights of Columbus and high school students. During the service, 53 white roses were presented to symbolize each year since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in 1972—a decision overturned in 2022.
The Mass concluded with roses given to schools, churches, and organizations present as recognition for their dedication to pro-life ministry.
