Bishop Daniel E. Thomas of Toledo, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, reflected on the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide. Bishop Thomas highlighted the significance of this Jubilee Year as "Pilgrims of Hope," urging Catholics to experience God's love and salvation in Christ.
Bishop Thomas called for January 22 to be observed as a day of prayer and penance, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to restore legal protection for preborn children and support parents facing challenging pregnancies. He also stressed the importance of seeking forgiveness and healing from God for participating in what he described as a "culture of death."
"Abortion inflicts deep and lasting wounds on society, but more directly on individuals and families," said Bishop Thomas. He acknowledged that many parents feel pressured or coerced into choosing abortion and expressed sorrow for their loss.
Addressing parents who have experienced abortion, Bishop Thomas stated, "No sin is beyond His unfathomable Mercy." He encouraged those seeking reconciliation to utilize the Sacrament of Reconciliation for forgiveness, hope, and peace.
In closing his reflection, Bishop Thomas reiterated Pope Francis's invitation to experience God's love during this Jubilee Year, allowing those involved in abortion to repent with confidence in God's forgiveness.
