Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, has issued a pastoral letter titled "Somos Sus Testigos" on the eighth anniversary of his installation as archbishop. The letter addresses the themes of "pastoral conversion" and "missionary discipleship," which Pope Francis has encouraged for prayerful consideration since the beginning of his papacy.

In his reflections, Cardinal Tobin emphasizes the call to follow Jesus as "the way, the truth, and the life" (Jn 14:6), inviting believers to repentance and to witness His love and truth. He notes that pastoral conversion involves openness to God's Word and listening to one another while journeying together as children of God.

The cardinal references a document approved by Pope Francis at a recent synod in Rome, stating: "The Church exists to testify to the world about the decisive event in history: the Resurrection of Jesus." He further explains that this testimony is essential for bringing Christ's peace to a troubled world.

Cardinal Tobin introduces "Somos Sus Testigos" as a multi-year initiative under the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” aimed at addressing various questions related to opportunities and challenges within northern New Jersey. The initiative will explore concepts such as synodality, missionary outreach, faith formation, spiritual renewal, collaboration among church leadership, and regional cooperation.

Bishop Michael A. Saporito will lead this initiative as Regional Bishop of Bergen County. He will oversee planning processes and ensure effective communication with pastoral leaders. A newly formed Pastoral Planning Commission will assist him in designing and implementing this comprehensive effort.

Cardinal Tobin encourages all members of the Archdiocese of Newark to participate actively in responding to future opportunities and challenges through prayerful discernment. The goal is to present a unified pastoral plan by summer 2026.

He concludes with an invitation for collective prayer for the success of "Somos Sus Testigos," emphasizing unity in Christ under guidance from the Holy Spirit.
