Pope Francis inaugurated the Jubilee Year of Hope on Christmas Eve in Vatican City. Shortly after, Bishop John Noonan began the celebrations in the Diocese of Orlando with a procession symbolizing the pilgrimage of people. The event coincided with the feast of the Holy Family and emphasized this year's theme, Pilgrims of Hope.
Rita Thiron, executive director of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, reflected on hope's significance: "How providential that we are called to celebrate this year and to ponder the virtue of hope. In a world torn by war, and evil deeds, we need hope."
A Jubilee Year is an important period for Catholics to celebrate Christ's messianic favor. Traditionally held every 25 years since the 13th century, it includes pilgrimages and religious ceremonies that provide opportunities for reconciliation and indulgence.
The Holy Father has designated four Holy Doors at major basilicas in Rome as focal points for pilgrims. In Orlando, sites include St. James Cathedral and two other churches where indulgences can be obtained through specific acts like attending Mass or participating in prayers.
Father Anthony Aarons announced a Pilgrimage of the Sick scheduled for February 15 at Mary, Queen of the Universe Basilica. The event will offer Mass participation and sacraments such as Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.
Father Aarons highlighted indulgences as "an extra mercy beyond what the Lord has in store for us," urging frequent participation during this Jubilee Year which ends December 28, 2025.
