The Archbishop of Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, shared a Christmas message emphasizing the closeness of God to humanity through the birth of Jesus. He highlighted that "in the birth of Jesus, the living God becomes Emmanuel—'God with us.'" Cardinal Tobin reminded that God's presence is a powerful reminder of divine love and desire to be central in human lives.

Cardinal Tobin noted the familiarity of the Christmas story, which might overshadow its wonder and meaning. He pointed out that Jesus was born in a humble stable, surrounded by Mary, Joseph, and social outcasts like shepherds. "He was not born in a palace but in poverty," he said. The cardinal stressed that true greatness is found in love, humility, and service rather than wealth or power.

He elaborated on the deeper significance of Jesus' birth circumstances, referencing an Italian carol by St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori: “How much it cost you to love me!” Cardinal Tobin reflected on how God chose to come as a vulnerable baby dependent on Mary and Joseph for care and protection. This paradox reveals that God's power is demonstrated through love and vulnerability.

Cardinal Tobin encouraged reflection on how Jesus' message resonates today. He asked if people can embrace humility and service in relationships and care for the poor, homeless, and marginalized. "Are we offering similar love and protection to those who need it most?" he questioned.

The cardinal described this season as one of joy and hope, reminding believers of God's peace amidst global turmoil. He urged action beyond exchanging gifts as symbols of deeper sharing initiated by God's incarnation through His Son. The season invites self-giving—of time, resources, and love—as God has given Himself to humanity.

"May the peace of Christ fill your hearts this Christmas," Cardinal Tobin concluded his message with blessings for 2025 as a Jubilee Year bringing new blessings for all as Pilgrims of Hope.

Sincerely yours in Christ Redeemer,

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

Archbishop of Newark
