Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
Log Still Distillery in Gethsemane, Kentucky, has partnered with the Archdiocese of Louisville to launch a new bourbon called "Faithfully Crafted: the Trinity Blend Bourbon." This collaboration celebrates the shared history of Catholicism and bourbon-making in the region.
J.W. “Wally” Dant, founder and president of Log Still, highlighted the historical connection between the archdiocese and bourbon production. He noted that many early Catholic settlers from Maryland were distillers, including his own family. "When Catholics came over from Maryland, many of them were distillers," he said.
The area known as Kentucky Holy Land became home to numerous Catholic parishes and distilleries as more Catholics settled there. Richard “Tink” Guthrie from the Archdiocese of Louisville remarked on this heritage: "Many of our Catholic faithful were employed in these distilleries."
Dant's family has deep roots in both faith and spirits. His great-grandfather acquired a distillery at Log Still's current site after prohibition, contributing to its infrastructure development. His father, Father John Wallace “Wally” Dant, was raised on this property and later ordained as a priest.
Log Still’s brand "Monk’s Road" pays homage to Dant's Catholic background. The road leads to the Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani, emphasizing his family's religious ties.
The new Trinity Blend Bourbon is a three-barrel blend designed to reflect Kentucky Catholics' pride. "Buy one to drink and one to save," suggested Dant regarding the commemorative bottles featuring the archdiocese’s coat of arms.
Guthrie expressed hope that this collaboration would be met with curiosity: "We see this as a fun collaboration." If successful, future blends may be considered.
Bottled at Log Still Distillery, 5,000 bottles are available for $55 each. A portion of proceeds will support community initiatives aligned with the archdiocese’s mission. The bourbon is available at Log Still Distillery in Gethsemane and Monk’s Road Boiler House in Louisville.
