Walande Casseus, who moved from Haiti to central Florida two years ago, has been striving for a better life with the assistance of Catholic Charities of Central Florida. Despite facing numerous challenges, she remains hopeful.
Casseus initially sought help from Catholic Charities while pregnant in 2023. Her pregnancy was complicated by health issues, but Awilda Wilburn from Comprehensive Refugee Services assisted her in obtaining Medicaid and necessary medical care. Wilburn also helped her secure housing.
In April 2024, Casseus suffered a severe injury when a stranger pushed her off her bike, resulting in a broken spine. Unable to work due to this injury, she once again turned to Catholic Charities for support.
“Without Awi lda, with my 10-month-old baby, I would be in a lot of distress,” Casseus stated. “The mental pain I have would be much harder. Today, I am in a new place, and it is comfortable.”
An anonymous donor provided essential items like beds and a crib for Casseus's family.
Currently undergoing physical therapy to regain balance and find employment, Casseus expressed optimism about her recovery: “I prefer to cultivate the idea that I’m going to be back on my feet and be okay — if not this month, then next month there will be improvement,” she said. “I have the necessities. I can manage to live on my own now.”
Wilburn reflected on her experience assisting Casseus: “Working with this client has been an awakening,” she said. “I saw the mercy of God that was transmitted through the people who helped, and the way everything came about in ‘God’s time.’ I thank God for allowing me to live this experience and I ask Him to continue blessing our program.”
