Damein Mitchell, who spent two decades in and out of prison, has turned his life around with the help of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Peter Claver Prison Ministry and Promising People. The ministry's director, Carlos Benitez, described Promising People as transformative: “It’s a prayer coming through,” he said. The program focuses on employment, housing, personal and social services, and spirituality.
Mitchell now holds a full-time job, manages family properties, is reconnecting with his children, and is pursuing a Construction Management degree. He credits God for guiding him after learning about his children's future while in prison.
In April 2018, Mitchell was informed by the prison chaplain that he had options regarding his children's care following their mother's death. He prayed for guidance and decided to maintain custody upon release. His children stayed with relatives until then.
While incarcerated, Mitchell engaged in religious programs and worked closely with St. Peter Claver’s Ministry. Tom Gawronski from St. Margaret Mary Parish remembers Mitchell's dedication during the Passport to Success program aimed at preparing inmates for life outside prison.
After leaving prison in June 2023, Mitchell joined Fresh Start—a Christian transitional housing program—and secured a construction job where he has since been promoted several times.
Through St. Peter Claver Ministry's connection with Promising People, Mitchell received virtual reality training for certifications in various fields and enrolled in an online college to pursue higher-paying opportunities.
Mitchell appreciates the structure provided by Promising People: “For me it was very simple... It brings with it a certification which enhances your ability to land or move further in a career.” He plans to complete his Construction Management degree within 18 months while working full-time.
This Christmas marks the first time in eight years that Mitchell will spend the holiday with all his children. He remains thankful for the support from St. Peter Claver Ministry and Promising People: “The doors are there... God will do anything for you.”
