Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
The Archdiocese of Louisville's Office of Multicultural Ministry is set to host its annual Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration on December 17 at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Catholic Enrichment Center located on West Broadway.
This celebration will feature music, food, prayer, and African drumming. Kwanzaa is a holiday that honors family, community, and culture within the African American and Pan-African communities.
Kwanzaa spans seven days from December 26 to January 1 and is founded on "Nguzo Saba," which translates to "seven principles" in Swahili. According to an announcement from the Office of Multicultural Ministry, these principles are celebrated by families creating sacred spaces in their homes. In these spaces, symbols of the celebration are displayed. These include a candle holder known as a "Kinara" for seven candles, a unity cup, ears of corn symbolizing children, and African art objects and books representing a dedication to African heritage and learning.
