The St. John's University community came together on December 6 to honor the life of Luigi "Lou" P. Carnesecca, a revered figure in college basketball and a former coach at the university. Coach Carnesecca passed away on November 30, just weeks before his 100th birthday.

The funeral Mass was held at St. Thomas More Church on the Queens campus, drawing former players, alumni, faculty, and others who wanted to pay their respects. Coach Carnesecca was celebrated for his significant contributions to basketball and the impact he had on those around him.

"He did not just teach us about basketball—he taught us about life, with grace and warmth," said Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., University President. The event included notable attendees such as Chris Mullin, Bill Wennington, Walter Berry, and Mark Jackson—all former players who spoke about the lasting influence of Coach Carnesecca.

"Share your knowledge, share your experience," Mullin said while recalling some of Coach Carnesecca's lessons. Felipe Lopez also reflected on why so many players admired Coach Carnesecca: "He knew how to manage people; he knew how to take great players and make them greater."

Rev. Richard Rock, C.M., delivered a homily that highlighted Coach Carnesecca's role beyond coaching as an ambassador of the Vincentian spirit. William G. Schaeffer shared personal memories and noted Coach's warm personality.

P.J. Carlesimo emphasized Coach Carnesecca's importance to the BIG EAST conference: "It is impossible to imagine the BIG EAST without Lou Carnesecca."

A private family burial followed the Mass. St. John's further honored him during basketball games on December 7 with commemorative pins and shooting shirts featuring his win total of 526 games.

Current Men's Basketball Head Coach Rick Pitino paid tribute by wearing a replica sweater during a game against Kansas State. Plans are in place for additional tributes at upcoming games.
