Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, emphasized the significance of John the Baptist as a central figure in Advent preparations. In a recent message, Cardinal Tobin highlighted Pope Francis's reflections on John the Baptist from two years ago, describing him as a herald and precursor to Jesus Christ.
John the Baptist is noted for his role in preparing for Jesus's arrival by preaching repentance and baptism with water. He is portrayed as an austere figure who lived in the desert, subsisting on locusts and honey. Despite this stern image, Pope Francis suggests that John's radical approach was necessary to confront the hypocrisy of religious and political leaders of his time.
"John preached the nearness of the Kingdom," said Pope Francis. He further explained that John was "allergic to duplicity," emphasizing honesty and humility as crucial virtues during Advent.
Cardinal Tobin also pointed out that Mary, mother of Jesus, accompanies believers alongside John during Advent. This year, December 9 marks the celebration of the transferred Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
Pope Francis's Angelus Message on December 4, 2022, reiterated these themes by warning against hypocrisy and encouraging humility. He stated: "Hypocrisy is a serious danger... prowess is not important to welcome God, but rather humility."
As Advent continues, Cardinal Tobin encourages reflection on personal duplicity and openness to conversion. The season calls for removing masks and embracing humility as believers prepare for Christ’s coming.
