Several individuals from the Archdiocese of Louisville are participating in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, an organization dedicated to supporting Christians in the Holy Land. This group is part of a global membership that includes 30,000 individuals, as stated on their website, oessh.va.

The order traces its origins back to the first crusade and aims to provide for Christians, churches, and Christian schools in the Holy Land. Father Anthony Chandler, a Knight Commander of the Holy Sepulchre and pastor at Holy Spirit and St. Leonard churches, emphasized that Christians make up only about two percent of the population in this region. He noted that they rely heavily on support from various Christian operations.

Father Chandler highlighted that without these religious groups and holy sites, employment opportunities for Christians would be scarce. The order welcomes clergy, religious figures, and laypeople alike. Men who join are known as "knights," while women are referred to as "dames." Both wear capes bearing a red Jerusalem cross.

Membership involves four key aspects: prayer, financial generosity, pilgrimage, and awareness. Prayer plays a vital role in supporting Christian operations in the Holy Land. Members must also be practicing Catholics engaged in ongoing formation within their parishes and dioceses.

Edward Bauer from St. Louis Bertrand Church described spiritual development as central to membership. Bruce Hines from Holy Trinity Church explained that members contribute annually to support churches and ministries in conflict-affected areas.

Members are encouraged to undertake personal pilgrimages to walk "in the footsteps of Jesus," which Father Chandler described as spiritually enriching experiences. Pilgrimages can deepen faith and understanding of biblical texts.

The order's contributions also fund schools educating both Christian and non-Christian students with messages promoting peace. Hines remarked on how these institutions might be unique places where students learn respect or tolerance.

Regional gatherings called "lieutenancies" occur annually for new member investments and updates on conditions in the Holy Land. In October 2024, four men from Louisville were invested during such an event held in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Other notable members include Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre; Father Philip Erickson; Father Martin Linebach; Deacon Scott Hedges; Sandra Lucero; Thomas Monaghan; among others.

Those interested in joining can contact Edward Bauer via email or visit eohsjnorthcentral.org for more information about regional activities.

An annual Good Friday collection across the archdiocese supports these initiatives furthering Christian presence in the region.
