Parishes within the Archdiocese of Newark are set to participate in the annual Retirement Fund for Religious collection on December 7-8. This event provides an opportunity for Catholics to support aging members of religious communities who have dedicated their lives to ministry and service.

In 2023, parishioners from the Archdiocese contributed $335,784.55 to this nationwide appeal. A portion of these funds, amounting to $58,574.46, was allocated directly to the Dominican Nuns and the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, assisting in providing essential care for their members.

John Knutsen, director of the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO), expressed gratitude for the ongoing generosity shown by U.S. Catholics: “Your contributions bring comfort and dignity to the sisters, brothers, and priests who have given so much,” Knutsen stated. He further encouraged participation this year by inviting individuals "to honor their legacy by prayerfully considering a gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious.”

Religious communities face significant challenges due to rising healthcare costs and a lack of traditional retirement plans. Currently, over 20,000 religious individuals in the United States are aged over 70. The average annual cost of care is $59,700 per person—rising to $90,700 for those needing skilled nursing care.

Since its start in 1988, the Retirement Fund for Religious collection has raised more than $1 billion. Of this total, $870 million has been distributed directly to religious communities for care expenses while an additional $103.5 million has been invested in programs aimed at sustainable retirement planning.

Last year's appeal garnered $29.3 million in donations benefiting 286 religious communities across the nation. These funds provide not only immediate financial relief but also support educational initiatives that help build long-term financial stability.

The NRRO coordinates this national appeal with sponsorship from leading Catholic organizations such as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and others.

Faithful are urged to consider making a sacrificial gift reflecting on lifelong contributions made by religious men and women; every donation aids in ensuring these devoted servants receive necessary care.
