A significant donation from the Estate of Virginia Powers, in memory of her son Stephen Powers, is transforming the Computer Science Department at Iona University. The $1 million gift is aimed at enhancing hands-on learning through advanced equipment that reflects Stephen's passion for practical technology solutions.
Fred Powers, Stephen's brother, expressed the family's sentiments: “On behalf of the Powers family, we are delighted to honor Stephen’s legacy.” He acknowledged Iona as the place where Stephen developed his interest in computer science during the mid-1980s and appreciated their mother, Virginia Powers, for her generosity.
Stephen graduated with honors from Iona in 1987 and went on to work at Powers Fasteners. There he revamped the IT department and created software solutions that integrated operations across multiple international locations. His approach to technology was marked by innovation and a hands-on attitude.
Stephen also enjoyed boating, golfing, skiing, and had a strong love for animals. Family was central to his life; he cherished time with his wife Christina and daughters Alexis and Sydney. He believed that “family comes first and the business is there to serve the family.”
In October 2024, the Powers family attended a dedication ceremony for the new Stephen Powers ’87 Computer Science Suite at Iona's New Rochelle campus. The event included personal stories about Stephen’s curiosity and technical skills. A VR demonstration led by faculty showcased how his legacy will inspire future students.
Iona University was founded in 1940 as a private Catholic institution offering various undergraduate and graduate programs. It has campuses in New Rochelle and Bronxville near Manhattan. Known for its small class sizes and diverse academic offerings, Iona ranks highly among national colleges.
