When Father Ramon Decaen was a deacon, he served at All Saints Parish in Manassas, Virginia. During his final year at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, he spent time with parishioners after Sunday Mass before returning to the seminary. A fellow alumnus of Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California, recalls their extended conversations outside the church.
At that time, the writer was contemplating his path to priesthood while working construction and living with family. Deacon Decaen encouraged him to pursue his calling by providing contact information for Father Robert Matya, vocations director for the Diocese of Lincoln. This led to his ordination in 2005.
Father Decaen shared a summer with the writer when they were both deacons serving in different parishes. Though their paths diverged as priests—Decaen focused on high school teaching and Hispanic ministry while the writer taught philosophy—they occasionally met when schedules allowed.
Despite health challenges, "Padre Ramon" remained dedicated to his parishioners and family. He often traveled long distances to visit family in California, sometimes accompanied by his black Labrador Petrus.
The article highlights Father Decaen's devotion and faithfulness throughout his life: "He competed well. He ran the race. He kept the faith."
In November, the Church encourages remembrance and prayer for departed souls through a project called “Echoes of Faith: Remembering Our Catholic Inspiration.” The initiative shares stories from priests, religious figures, and laity about individuals who impacted their Catholic faith.
Readers are invited to follow these daily stories throughout November on lincolndiocese.org/echoesoffaith and social media channels.
