Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, has released a message addressing the universal call to holiness in the context of recent religious observances. Reflecting on the Church's liturgical calendar, Cardinal Tobin highlighted the significance of transitioning from October, dedicated to Mary, to November, when the Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls are observed.
Cardinal Tobin emphasized Mary's role in salvation history and her importance during the Second Vatican Council. He stated that Mary is "a sign of true hope and comfort for God's pilgrim people." Her example of faithfulness amidst adversity serves as a guide for Christians today.
The cardinal also addressed how saints provide a model for living according to Christ's teachings through their everyday actions and devotion. "The response is closeness to God through prayer," he said, emphasizing that saints persist in seeking God's will despite challenges.
He expressed gratitude for all saints and urged believers to strive towards holiness: "Today we celebrate all saints...we are reminded that the call to holiness is universal."
Pope Francis' message was also included in Cardinal Tobin's address, encouraging individuals to become "saints next door" by responding positively in daily life situations.
Concluding his message with words from Jesus' Beatitudes, Cardinal Tobin called on everyone within his archdiocese to work together towards holiness with confidence.
