The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a call for prayer and unity following the recent general election in which Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump defeated Democratic nominee and current Vice President Kamala Harris to secure another term as president.

In a statement released on November 6, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services extended his congratulations to "President-elect Trump, as well as the national, state and local officials who campaigned to represent the people." He emphasized that it is now time to transition from campaigning to governing.

Archbishop Broglio remarked on the democratic nature of the United States, highlighting that Americans are "fortunate to live in a democracy," allowing for peaceful transitions between governments. He also noted that "the Catholic Church is not aligned with any political party, and neither is the bishops’ conference."

Regardless of political outcomes, he affirmed that "the Church’s teachings remain unchanged," expressing the bishops' willingness to work with elected representatives "to advance the common good of all." He urged Christians and Americans alike to engage with one another respectfully and civilly despite policy disagreements.

He also underscored a responsibility towards those beyond U.S. borders, advocating for assistance to be extended universally.

In closing his statement, Archbishop Broglio invited prayers for "President-elect Trump, as well as all leaders in public life," urging them to meet their responsibilities effectively. He called upon intercession from "our Blessed Mother" to guide efforts in promoting human dignity and addressing issues affecting vulnerable groups such as "the unborn, the poor, the stranger, the elderly and infirm, and migrants."
