Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
The Archdiocese of Louisville is witnessing a promising future with 19 seminarians currently in formation for the priesthood. Father Martin Linebach, the vicar for vocations and director of the Vocation Office, expressed optimism about this development.
“They’re a clear sign of hope and people should be confident,” stated Father Linebach in a recent interview. He is actively visiting these men at their seminaries, noting that they are all progressing well, especially those new to the program.
Five seminarians—Peter Bifone Jr., Nico Caicedo, Ryan Rasmussen, Jonathan Heitkemper, and Thomas Wichmann—are in their propaedeutic year. This preparatory stage focuses on spiritual and human development rather than academics. Father Linebach explained that during this time, they learn community living and healthy interpersonal relationships while emphasizing physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
Seminarians further along in their journey have assumed leadership roles within their seminaries. Evrard Muhoza, studying at St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in Indiana, serves on the seminary council as a prefect, providing guidance to his peers.
Father Linebach highlighted the significance of these young men for parishioners: “I tell parishioners that it’s one of these young men who will baptize your children, preside at your daughter’s wedding or go for the last sacrament for you or your parents.”
Parishes are encouraged to support and pray for these seminarians as part of creating a "culture of vocation." An example is St. Edward Church's "Adopt-a-Seminarian" initiative which helps parishioners connect with the seminarians.
Families are also playing an active role through a group called “Parents of Seminarians,” which organizes Masses, suppers, and fellowship gatherings.
Looking ahead, Father Linebach mentioned that there are six to eight men discerning their vocation to the priesthood. “Many good things are happening,” he remarked.
