Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of Newark has shared his reflections on the 16th General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which is currently taking place at the Vatican. He expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for the opportunity to represent his archdiocese and participate in this global gathering.
Cardinal Tobin emphasized the significance of synods as ancient and vital means for church leaders to be guided by the Holy Spirit. "The composition of the Synod 'expresses a way of exercising episcopal ministry consistent with the living Tradition of the Church and with the teaching of the Second Vatican Council,'" he quoted Pope Francis from his opening speech.
Pope Francis highlighted that no bishop or Christian should think of themselves "without others," stressing that salvation requires everyone to be heard. Cardinal Tobin acknowledged that listening to all members of God's people could be daunting without the Holy Spirit's presence.
He outlined the three phases established by Pope Paul VI for each Synod: preparation, celebration, and implementation. The Archdiocese of Newark fully participated in these phases, initiated by Pope Francis in 2021. As they complete the second phase, Cardinal Tobin looks forward to returning home to begin implementing this historic moment in church life.
"The Holy Spirit always accompanies us," reminded Pope Francis, offering hope even when feeling defeated. The mission entrusted to every baptized person is to joyfully proclaim salvation in Christ.
The Synod's origins date back to September 15, 1965, instituted by Saint Paul VI during Vatican II. Recently renewed by Pope Francis through Apostolic Constitution Episcopalis communio, it emphasizes synodality as a core dimension at all levels within the Church.
Pope Francis also delivered a message during this assembly session urging reflection on humility and solidarity among Christians. He stated that "the Church cannot walk and renew itself without the Holy Spirit."
In closing, Cardinal Tobin invited everyone to join him in prayer for a successful Synod outcome.
