Rev. James D. Conley, D.D., S.T.L. | Diocese of Lincoln website
The Catholic Diocese of Lincoln has rebranded its Office of Religious Education as the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis. This change aims to align with the broader mission of evangelization, responding to what is known as the New Evangelization. The initiative reflects a commitment to renewing faith within diocesan communities.
This restructuring mirrors the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops' framework. Bishop James Conley, who has contributed significantly to the Conference’s Institute on the Catechism, supports this move. Jeff Schinstock, director of evangelization and catechesis, was present at related conferences alongside Bishop Conley.
Schinstock stated, “We have a great tradition of good catechesis in the diocese. To maintain and flourish, we have to be open to the Holy Spirit." He emphasized that catechesis should involve opportunities for personal encounters with God and nurture those experiences through accompaniment.
The integration of evangelization into catechesis aims to foster a culture encouraging faith sharing and spiritual growth among individuals, families, and communities. Schinstock noted that support for catechists and parish leaders would continue with resources and formation opportunities focused on effective evangelization.
While continuing its previous functions, the office plans new projects to facilitate encounters with faith across the diocese. Schinstock remarked that "this is not just a change in name; it is a step towards mission."
He quoted Pope St. Paul VI: “the Church exists in order to evangelize” (Evangelii nuntiandi16), stressing that every Catholic plays a role in this mission. According to Schinstock, Catholics must be nourished by engaging catechesis and be patient companions in others' spiritual journeys.
Recalling St. Paul's words: “Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16), Schinstock highlighted the importance of taking up this task with enthusiasm wherever one may be. The office's role is to provide nourishment for this journey so that Christ's love becomes known universally.
