Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
During October, the Catholic Church honors the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, highlighted this observance in a message to his followers. He quoted St. Thérèse of Lisieux: “The loveliest masterpiece of the heart of God is the heart of a mother,” and emphasized Mary's role as a reflection of God's compassion and tenderness.
Cardinal Tobin explained that "compassion" involves sharing in others' suffering, while "tenderness," a theme often addressed by Pope Francis, calls for welcoming difficulties with warmth rather than impersonal solutions. He stated, “How much the world needs tenderness today! The patience of God, the closeness of God, the tenderness of God.”
The Cardinal reflected on Christian beliefs about God's dual nature as both powerful and tender. He pointed out that Jesus Christ's experience growing up in a humble family showed him compassion and tenderness through Mary.
Pope Francis also teaches about Mary’s significant role in faith: “At the center of our faith is the confession of Jesus, the Son of God, born of a woman.” According to Pope Francis, Mary's life and intercession guide believers towards Jesus.
The message concluded with an appeal to honor Mary’s influence by strengthening families through her example. Cardinal Tobin said: “May her intercession strengthen mothers and families everywhere.”
Additionally, excerpts from Pope Saint John Paul II's reflections encourage praying the rosary for peace amid global concerns. The late pope stated that contemporary spirituality seeks to focus on essentials like staying close to Christ through prayer.
A selection from Pope Francis's reflections emphasizes missions during October and draws strength from prayer: "Prayer is the breath of faith...the dialogue of the soul with God." He highlighted October as not only dedicated to missions but also as Rosary Month.
Both popes urged Catholics worldwide to engage in fervent prayer for peace and justice through Mary's intercession.
