Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
Cardinal Tobin has shared a video message with the faithful of the Archdiocese of Newark as he prepares to attend the second and final session of the Synod on Synodality in Rome. The session begins on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Cardinal Tobin will provide weekly video updates throughout October from this global gathering of bishops, clergy, and laypeople.
In his message, Cardinal Tobin expressed gratitude for the participation of the faithful in the Synod since its inception by Pope Francis in October 2021. He noted that their contributions had enriched the reflection during the First Session last October and would benefit the upcoming work.
"The theme at the heart of Synod 2021-2024 is 'For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission' – a call to joy and to the renewal of the People of God as we follow the Lord, always committed to serving His mission," Cardinal Tobin stated. He emphasized that this call is rooted in their common baptismal identity and diversity within the Church.
The focus of this second session will be on how to be a missionary synodal Church. "I foresee a further deepening of the shared understanding of the way of being Church that is called synodality, a better focus on the practices of a synodal Church, and the proposal of some changes in canon law," he said. However, he cautioned against expecting answers to every question at this stage.
Cardinal Tobin also highlighted his commitment to participating fully in the Synod due to his love for the Archdiocese. He mentioned various listening sessions held over summer and early fall with people from across Newark's Archdiocese.
He assured that he would share insights upon his return from Rome later this year. "Like last year, I will record a video each week to keep you informed of what’s happening in Rome," he said.
Cardinal Tobin concluded by asking for prayers for all members attending the Synod and assured them of his love and prayers.
