Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
In a recent message, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, emphasized the importance of active political participation for committed Christians and faithful citizens. He cited Pope Francis' teachings to highlight that politics should not be seen as a negative arena but as an essential aspect of ensuring the common good.
Cardinal Tobin acknowledged the current political uncertainty and the temptation to disengage from politics. However, he stressed that active involvement is crucial for sustaining the vision of a free society that guarantees liberty, justice, and equality for all.
Quoting Pope Francis' encyclical "Fratelli Tutti," Cardinal Tobin stated: “If society is to have a future, it must respect the truth of our human dignity and submit to that truth. . . . A society is noble and decent, not least for its support of the pursuit of truth and its adherence to the most basic of truths” (Fratelli Tutti, no. 207).
He also referenced a statement by U.S. bishops on the Role of the Church in American Political Life: "The truths that guide public life can be known by natural reason... Our Catholic faith sheds light on these truths, and so we have a duty to bring that light to our nation."
Cardinal Tobin urged citizens to vote conscientiously for candidates and policies they believe represent what is best for their nation and global relationships. He called for efforts towards peace, justice, and equality at local, national, and international levels.
Pope Francis’ address on the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings was also mentioned by Cardinal Tobin. The Pope expressed hope against war's recurrence: “Never again war! Never again the horrors and atrocities... destroying this noble order of things for ideological, nationalistic or economic ambitions.”
The Cardinal concluded with an appeal against political violence: "As faithful citizens... we must denounce all forms of political and gun violence." He encouraged prayers through Mary Immaculate for peace across communities worldwide.
