WINTER PARK — Haylee, an 8-year-old girl born blind, has become a focal point for community efforts at Sts. Peter and Paul parish in Winter Park. Despite her visual impairment, Haylee recently secured second place in her age group at an international Braille competition held in Los Angeles.

Haylee’s journey has been challenging yet rewarding. Her mother, Keisha, shared the family's initial struggles: “We put our faith in that God has a plan and everything happens for a reason,” she said. Her father, Alex, recounted difficulties finding suitable childcare but noted that Sts. Peter and Paul welcomed them warmly.

Parish catechetical leader Maribel De Abreu initially faced challenges teaching Haylee due to her blindness. However, assistance from the Xavier Society for the Blind enabled the translation of catechetical materials into Braille, significantly aiding Haylee's learning process.

Keisha observed that access to these materials sparked Haylee's religious curiosity: “It opened her religious curiosity – being able to read religious books herself and start to understand what was said,” she said.

Second-grade catechist Betsy Ferreira described Haylee as enthusiastic and engaged during class: “She was always the first one with her hand up,” Ferreira said. This engagement culminated in profound moments during faith discussions.

Father Derk Schudde emphasized the parish’s collective effort: “Our family presents us with unexpected challenges... we try to figure it out as best we can.” He also praised Haylee’s parents for their dedication despite personal challenges.

Haylee expressed gratitude for the support received: “That God loves me no matter how I do in school or how I feel about myself.”
