Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, has issued a pastoral letter emphasizing the importance of the Eucharist and the unity it fosters within the Church. The letter references Pope Pius XII's 1943 encyclical "Mystici Corporis Christi" (The Mystical Body of Christ), which describes the Church as "the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ."

Cardinal Tobin explains that life in Christ begins with baptism and is sustained by receiving the Holy Eucharist. He cites St. Paul’s teaching that Christians form one body unified in diversity, dedicated to spiritual growth and transformation.

The Cardinal highlights the significance of the Eucharist as a sacrament instituted by Jesus during the Last Supper, quoting from St. Mark’s Gospel: “Take it; this is my body... This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many” (Mk 14:12–16, 22–26). He stresses that through this sacrament, believers are called to care for others' physical and spiritual needs.

Pope Francis's teachings are also referenced, reminding Christians that they are missionary disciples who embody Jesus’ love and mercy. The Eucharist provides nourishment to fulfill this mission.

Cardinal Tobin refers to an October 2023 Synod Synthesis Report which underscores that celebrating the Eucharist is fundamental for gathering God's people. It suggests steps such as celebrating Mass authentically, making liturgical language more accessible, and expanding community prayer beyond Mass.

Additionally, a homily from Pope Francis delivered on June 23, 2019, emphasizes sharing over accumulating wealth: “The ‘economy’ of the Gospel multiplies through sharing.” He urges believers to give what little they have for God’s work.

In conclusion, Cardinal Tobin calls for prayers inspired by Pope Francis for peace and reconciliation worldwide.

Sincerely,

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin

Archbishop of Newark
