St. Joseph School in York has introduced an outdoor classroom space to its playground, aiming to enhance the learning experience for students from preschool through eighth grade. The new area, measuring approximately 40 by 100 feet, is situated on the north side of the school playground.

"Research has shown that outdoor classrooms are beneficial in many ways," stated Principal Mary Jo Leininger. She noted that children who spend part of their day in an outdoor learning environment gain cognitive and emotional benefits.

"In today’s world," she continued, "many children are not getting enough time outdoors. Besides the usual recess activities of running, jumping, and climbing, the outdoor classroom will also provide areas for imaginative play and space for classes to be held outside."

Leininger emphasized that the school's goal is to create an outdoor classroom where students can develop practical skills, problem-solving abilities, resiliency, and a connection with nature.

Several projects were completed with assistance from Katie Krause, a UNL extension agent. Construction during the summer of 2023 included building a storage shed, a stage/deck with a ramp, a sand pit, small boulders, and pathways throughout the area. This spring saw the addition of outdoor musical instruments, a water wall, and a garden. Future plans include creating a "mud kitchen," playhouse, and further landscaping.

"Our students have been so excited to use the stage for dance parties, show-and-tell sessions, and story time on beautiful days," Leininger remarked. "They have run up and down the ramp with toy trucks, practiced their balancing skills on the small boulders, and spent many recesses immersed in conversation while playing in the sand pit."

She expressed gratitude to those who contributed to these projects: "Because of you, our students will benefit from this rich learning environment!"
