The Diocese of Orlando is hosting a full-day conference titled "Catholic Mental Health Gathering" in response to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops National Campaign for Mental Health. The event aims to provide self-reflection, mental health education, and encouragement to support those in need. It is an initiative to promote self-care and compassion within the Church, focusing on mental well-being for all individuals.

Deacon Ed Shoener, a key speaker at the conference, will address mental health literacy. The gathering will also feature discussions on spiritual aspects of mental health and sessions on overcoming anxiety and practical advice for parish staff in handling mental health situations sensitively. Catherine Galda, from Catholic Charities of Central Florida, will speak about creating trauma-informed parishes and fostering resilience in Catholic communities.

Galda emphasized the common human experience of mental well-being as a continuum, highlighting the importance of support and understanding in times of struggles. Luis Nieves, the diocesan director of pastoral ministry, underscored the significance of finding meaning in suffering within the Catholic tradition and the importance of empathy towards others.

The conference aims to instill hope and support within the Catholic community, echoing the message of the Gospel in providing understanding and assistance to those facing mental health challenges. The event, "Catholic Mental Health Gathering: Finding Peace in His Presence," will take place on May 18 at Holy Family Parish in Orlando.
