Catholics from across Louisiana gathered at the State Capitol in a strong show of support for social justice issues during this year's Faithful Citizenship Day, organized by the Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops (LCCB) on April 17. The event saw a significant increase in attendance compared to the previous year, with 92 individuals participating, up from 38 in the previous year. Tom Costanza, Executive Director of LCCB, welcomed the attendees, highlighting the presence of young individuals from schools like Rummel High School and Notre Dame High School.

The day focused on key priorities such as protecting the life and dignity of the human person, supporting parental choice in education, addressing poverty, and improving restorative justice programs. Following a session at St. Joseph Cathedral Parish Hall, participants proceeded to the Capitol to observe committee hearings on relevant topics. Jorje Lavastida, coordinator of the Office of Life, Peace, and Justice of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, emphasized the importance of Catholics being well-informed on civic matters and voting responsibly.

Deacon Shelley Joseph shared his insights on the legislative process, noting the impact it has on the people he serves. Sister Maura O'Donovan, a Sister of the Holy Faith, stressed the role of faith communities in promoting social awareness and advocacy. Douglas Kariker from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese New Orleans described the emotional moments during committee hearings, where the passage of a supported bill brought tears to many.

The day culminated in Mass celebrated by Bishop Michael G. Duca, followed by interactions with Catholic legislators. The group was later recognized by the House of Representatives, showcasing the impact of their collective presence. Dr. Susan Weishar, a Fellow at the Jesuit Social Research Institute/Loyola University New Orleans, commended the turnout and emphasized the importance of Catholic advocacy in public policy.

Bridget Soileau, President of Baton Rouge Right to Life, highlighted the significance of Catholics engaging in the legislative process to uphold moral values and effect meaningful change. The event concluded with a meeting with Kyle Ardoin, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs & Rural Development of the State of Louisiana.

The positive feedback and engagement from participants underscored the success of Faithful Citizenship Day in empowering Catholics to advocate for social justice and contribute to a more just society.
