Melbourne - The intersection of faith and science took center stage at Ascension Catholic School's recent Space Day event. Organized by a dedicated committee led by Lillie Switanek, the school's licensed clinical social worker, the event aimed to provide students with engaging STEM activities.

The idea for Space Day was sparked by parent Mercedes Zuk, who had successfully implemented a similar event at another school. Switanek, impressed by the concept, spearheaded the initiative at Ascension Catholic School with the support of parents, parishioners, clergy, and space industry professionals.

The event featured a range of activities, including rocket demonstrations, a Tesla coil showcase, and a thought-provoking Faith and Science Forum. Andrew, a third-grader at the school, expressed his enthusiasm for rockets, highlighting the diversity of rockets used for different missions. Meanwhile, Savanna, a fifth-grader, was captivated by the Tesla coil, marveling at its ability to power objects from a distance.

One of the most significant aspects of Space Day was the Faith and Science Forum, where students had the opportunity to engage with professionals working at NASA and other engineering firms. Father Zachary Parker, who moderated the forum, emphasized the importance of exploring the connections between science, faith, and the mysteries of the cosmos.

Amelia, an eighth-grader, shared her inspiring experience at the forum, particularly noting the story of NASA employee Crystal Jones, whose journey of faith resonated with her. Another standout moment was when Augie, a sixth-grader, eloquently explained the concept of the Hubble Telescope as a time machine during a panel discussion.

Reflecting on the event, Switanek underscored the value of community collaboration and expressed hope for the continued development of STEM initiatives at the school. She envisions Space Day becoming an annual tradition that fosters a deeper appreciation for the integration of faith and science among students.

The successful convergence of faith and science at Space Day serves as a testament to the power of interdisciplinary education and the enriching experiences it offers to young minds.
