Father Greg Adolf from Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish in Sierra Vista recently blessed the vines at Sonoita Vineyards, the oldest commercial vineyard in Arizona. The tradition, which began in 1978, is a special event that brings together local clergy to celebrate the Blessing of the Vines.

Father Greg expressed the long-standing relationship between the church and the winery, stating, "The Dutt family have been friends for many years, and now the third generation of the family is managing the vineyard. We also like to support local producers and artisans from the area." This bond has led to the serving of Angel Wings wine, a semi-sweet blush that has become a favorite at both the winery and the parish.

In addition to supporting local producers, Father Greg highlighted the significance of using Communion hosts made by the Cistercian Sisters at Santa Rita Abbey, also located in Sonoita. He mentioned, "While the diocese does not mandate suppliers and providers, there is something special in knowing the Sisters who bake the hosts, and the winegrowers and workers who provide the wine for the Eucharist." This connection adds a meaningful layer to the ritual of partaking in the Eucharist.

Reflecting on the history of the annual blessing, Father Greg fondly recalled the first ceremony nearly 50 years ago, noting the presence of "monsoon clouds and a double rainbow." The event not only symbolizes a spiritual connection to the land and the community but also serves as a reminder of the continuous bond between the church, the vineyard, and the local artisans who contribute to the sacramental elements used in Mass."
