On April 15, 2024, a new Jimmy John’s location opened its doors at Franciscan Square in Steubenville, Ohio. The addition of the popular sandwich franchise marks an exciting development for the community, joining other well-known establishments like Rubi’s Pizza and Grill and the recently opened Irish pub, The Harp and Habit.
The Jimmy John’s franchise at Franciscan Square is operated by Spin the Planet, owned by Franciscan University of Steubenville alumnus Dan VanSteenburg ’92 and managed by fellow alumnus, Liam Galligan ’22. Phil Rook, the Director of Real Estate Development at the University, expressed his enthusiasm for the new addition, stating, “Landing a national chain like Jimmy John’s is a big win for the University and the local community.”
Local developer Franco Carapellotti played a crucial role in bringing Jimmy John’s to town and expressed gratitude towards the franchise and Spin the Planet team, saying, “We are grateful for Jimmy John’s and the Spin the Planet team for seeing the potential in Steubenville and Franciscan Square. They’re a great addition to the Square and our whole community, and we’re really excited to have them!”
Looking ahead, Rook mentioned plans to attract more businesses and restaurants to Franciscan Square, encouraging business owners, especially Franciscan University alumni, to consider partnerships. The goal for Franciscan Square is to create a mixed-use development that caters to the local community, guests, and university students, with future development opportunities including office and retail spaces, as well as multifamily housing.
With seven acres still available for development, Franciscan Square aims to revitalize the Ohio Valley, provide more amenities for residents and students, and create job opportunities. Those interested in exploring the potential in Steubenville at Franciscan Square can visit franciscansquare.com.
