Hundreds of students from Catholic schools around the Diocese of Orlando recently participated in the annual Focus 11 event, where they had the opportunity to deepen their faith and reflect on their vocations. The event, held at Holy Family Parish in Orlando, aimed to engage 11-year-olds and high school juniors in meaningful conversations about faith and identity as children of God.
According to Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary Sister Gianna Grace Perino, the theme of the event focused on Jesus's last two gifts: The Eucharist and Our Lady. Sister Perino emphasized the importance of uniting these two elements, stating that it provided a powerful experience for the participants who were "seeking the Lord in a powerful way."
During the event, guest speakers like Deacons Michael Batista and Phillip Mills, Bishop John Noonan, and Father Martin Nguyen shared their testimonies and insights with the students. Father Zachary Parker, a parochial vicar, encouraged the youth to embark on an adventure with God and to actively combat evil in the world.
Father Parker shared a touching story of encountering a homeless man and seeing Jesus in his eyes, which led him to understand the essence of faith. He emphasized that everyone has the ability to participate in a journey with God with the gifts of the Eucharist and Our Lady.
Ellona Delac, the youth director for Holy Family, shared her journey of discernment, highlighting the importance of consecrating one's life to Mary. The students engaged in various activities such as making rosaries, praying, and attending Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during the event.
Reflecting on the impact of Focus 11, sixth-grader Matthew expressed his gratitude for the event, stating, "I feel like God talks to me. I feel that I definitely have a mission." Another student, Malachi, described the event as both fun and educational, while Rachel appreciated the opportunity to see friends from other schools.
Father Josh Swallows, the diocesan vocations director, emphasized the importance of events like Focus 11 in helping students explore their faith and potential vocations. He noted that the event allows students to consider the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life while interacting with priests and religious individuals.
In conclusion, Focus 11 provided a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their faith, reflect on their vocations, and engage with the Catholic community. The event not only fostered spiritual growth but also encouraged young individuals to consider their roles in the Church and the world.
