Very Rev. Jamin S. David, J.C.L., V.G. | Diocese of Baton Rouge
Catholic High School students engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on social justice issues with formerly incarcerated individuals in Baton Rouge. The event, which took place at Catholic High School in March, provided a platform for students to interact, learn, and reflect on the challenges faced by those who have been through the criminal justice system.
Dr. Susan Weishar, a policy and research fellow at the Jesuit Social Research Institute (JSRI), shed light on the issue of mass incarceration in the United States. She emphasized the need for reform in the criminal justice system, especially in states like Louisiana, where the incarceration rate is alarmingly high. Weishar highlighted the disproportionate number of African Americans behind bars and the need for alternative forms of accountability.
During the event, formerly incarcerated individuals shared their personal stories of resilience and redemption. One of the speakers, Herman, who spent 27 years in prison before being released, spoke about the power of choices and the journey to forgiveness. He emphasized the importance of faith and reflected on his experience reintegrating into society.
CHS senior Briggs Bargas recounted a valuable lesson learned from a speaker about the significance of one's actions and moral compass. Another senior, Danny Woods, shared insights from a speaker who emphasized the role of the community in supporting personal transformation.
Demetricy, another speaker who recently obtained her freedom after serving 25 years in prison, highlighted the importance of making positive decisions and navigating a new life. She encouraged students to be vigilant and proactive in avoiding trouble.
The Teach-In provided a unique opportunity for Catholic High School students to gain perspective on the challenges faced by formerly incarcerated individuals and the importance of social justice advocacy. The event underscored the power of education, empathy, and faith in promoting positive change in society.
