Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
After he’s ordained to the transitional diaconate for the Archdiocese of Louisville on April 20, Cole McDowell is eagerly looking forward to stepping into the role of preaching and sharing in the lives of God’s people. McDowell, the son of James Patrick and Connie McDowell, will be ordained by Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Ky.
In a recent interview, McDowell expressed his enthusiasm for preaching, citing his background in high school drama and debate clubs as shaping his love for public speaking. He emphasized the importance of preaching in connecting with people, stating, "There are many ways to connect to people through preaching, regardless of where they are. I’m excited to grow my ability to preach."
Reflecting on the upcoming ordination, McDowell shared, "It’s been five years in the making. It’s one of those things I’ve been preparing for and praying for." At 30 years old, McDowell sees this milestone as an appropriate time to begin his ministry, drawing parallels to the age at which Jesus began his own ministry.
Father Martin Linebach, the archdiocese’s vicar for vocations, commended McDowell's qualities, affirming that his prayerful nature, gentleness, and compassion will make him a compassionate shepherd to many. Father Linebach expressed confidence in McDowell's abilities, stating, "Cole will do that well because he’s a man of prayer. He’s a gentle soul, which will make him a good shepherd to many."
As McDowell's diaconate ordination draws near, the anticipation and excitement for his future ministry are palpable, with those around him recognizing his readiness to serve and lead in the Church.
