Third Annual Women’s Luncheon Celebrates Accomplished Alumnae

The third annual Celebrating the Women of St. John’s University Luncheon, sponsored by The McCallen Society, was a resounding success, celebrating the achievements of outstanding alumnae. The event, held at The Inn at New Hyde Park in New Hyde Park, NY, honored five exceptional St. John’s University women for their professional accomplishments.

During the event, Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President of St. John’s University, highlighted the importance of recognizing and honoring the achievements of women. He emphasized the significance of acknowledging the accomplishments of women who have often gone unseen, stating, “Today, we see you. We lift you up for what you have done for St. John’s, for our country, and for our Church.”

Augusta Sanfilippo expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, “What a wonderful platform to amplify the strong women of St. John’s.” Shenneika S. Smith shared how being a woman of St. John’s has shaped her, attributing her growth to the support of professors, coaches, teammates, advisers, and administrators.

Kathleen Meehan, reflecting on her time at St. John’s, expressed her love for her work and the rewarding experience of interacting with young athletes. Emily Encalada, a Marketing major and attendee of the event, commended the influential women present for embodying the Vincentian mission and giving back to the community.

The luncheon also honored distinguished alumnae, including Jo Ann Kocher, Sue Ojageer, Augusta Sanfilippo, and Shenneika S. Smith, for their outstanding achievements in various fields. The keynote speaker, Lynda Carter-Cook, shared her inspiring journey as a microbiologist, gourmet chocolatier, and breast cancer survivor, highlighting the values of inspiration, compassion, excellence, and hope instilled during her time at St. John’s University.

The event, attended by over 300 guests, showcased the remarkable accomplishments of St. John’s alumnae and celebrated their contributions to society.
