St. John’s University mourns the passing of Joseph M. Mattone, Sr. ’53C, ’55L, ’94HON, a distinguished alumnus, philanthropist, and patriarch of the Mattone family. Reverend Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President of the University, expressed, “St. John’s University and metropolitan New York have lost a cherished son and torchbearer for the transformative power of the St. John’s experience.”

Mr. Mattone's life was characterized by his commitment to developing people and places. He once shared, "I don’t think it’s a coincidence that his Vincentian-influenced days at St. John’s Prep, St. John’s College, and the School of Law helped to shape him into who he became." He was born in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn in 1931 and was the last of nine children. Despite humble beginnings during the Great Depression, he graduated cum laude from St. John’s University and School of Law, seizing the opportunities presented to him.

A close friend, Reverend Bernard M. Tracey, C.M. ’70C, remarked, “The impact and contributions of Joe Mattone and his extended and beloved family is immeasurable.” Mr. Mattone's legacy extended beyond local philanthropy to support Vincentian works and initiatives worldwide, impacting countless people.

Throughout his successful career in real estate development, Mr. Mattone remained true to his values, always remembering his roots and investing in working-class neighborhoods. His company, Mattone Investors, LLC, has acquired and developed millions of square feet of real estate in the New York metropolitan area.

Mr. Mattone’s commitment to St. John’s University was unwavering. He was a founding member of the Board of Governors, Trustee, and Trustee Emeritus, leaving an indelible mark on the institution. He generously supported the construction of St. Thomas More Church and the establishment of the Mattone Family Institute for Real Estate Law at the School of Law.

In honor of his contributions, Mr. Mattone received numerous accolades from St. John’s University, including the President’s Medal, Medal of Honor, and an honorary Doctor of Law degree. His son, Michael X. Mattone ’91L, paid tribute to his father at the 2023 President’s Dinner, acknowledging the profound impact of Mr. Mattone’s Vincentian education on his life.

The funeral arrangements for Joseph M. Mattone, Sr. include visitations on March 25 and 26 at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, NY, with a funeral mass on March 27 at St. Thomas More Church on the Queens campus of St. John’s University.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the St. John's University School of Law or The Padre Pio Foundation in memory of Joseph Mattone Sr.
