Bishop Paul J. Bradley of Steubenville and Bishop Earl K. Fernandes of Columbus, along with their diocesan leadership teams, have submitted a summary of findings on how a potential merger could affect both dioceses. The summary was submitted to Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr of Cincinnati and the Apostolic Nunciature.

According to Bishop Fernandes, the bishops and their teams were tasked with assessing the potential impact of a merger on their dioceses. He stated, "Neither the bishops nor their leadership teams were tasked with making a decision, rather to consider how the aspects of diocesan life of the dioceses could be affected by a potential merger."

The summary, which was the result of discussions in numerous meetings, included details unique to each diocese. Both Columbus and Steubenville contributed to the document, highlighting the specific implications for their respective communities.

It is important to note that no decision regarding a merger has been made at this point. The final decision rests with Pope Francis, as Bishop Bradley pointed out, "The final decision will be made by the Holy Father, Pope Francis. This process of discernment is distinct from the process of implementation should a merger occur."

As the deliberation continues, Bishop Bradley, Bishop Fernandes, and their diocesan leadership teams are seeking the support and prayers of the clergy and laity in both dioceses. Bishop Fernandes concluded by asking for continued prayers, stating, "Bishop Bradley and Bishop Fernandes, as well as the diocesan leadership teams, ask for the continued prayers of the clergy and laity of both dioceses as Pope Francis discerns the path forward."
