Members of the St. John’s University community had the privilege of attending a Sunday Mass celebrated by Most Rev. Robert J. Brennan ’84C, Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, NY. Bishop Brennan delivered an inspiring homily at the 5:30 p.m. student Mass on the fourth Sunday of Lent at St. Thomas More Church on the University’s Queens campus.

Reflecting on the Gospel reading, Bishop Brennan reminded the faithful, "It is not that we have no reason to fear, or that anxiety is irrational. It is real. It is not that we do not have sufferings, but we do not have to face them alone."

During his homily, Bishop Brennan passionately spoke to students about the importance of facing obstacles and persevering through faith. Briana Tola, a first-year student, expressed how Bishop Brennan's message encouraged a life of service and pursuit of justice, saying, "It encourages a life lived in service to others, in pursuit of justice, and in the creation of a more compassionate world."

Bishop Brennan's close connection to St. John’s as an alum made his message even more impactful. Briana noted, “Bishop Brennan’s relationship with St. John’s is proof of a close kinship with principles like faith, leadership, and service.”

Acknowledging the 96th Academy Awards ceremony happening concurrently, Bishop Brennan shared his recent experience watching the film Cabrini, highlighting the story of Frances Cabrini and her dedication to helping orphaned children. He referenced Mother Cabrini's words in the film, urging bravery and unity in the face of challenges.

Sr. Patricia Evanick, Campus Minister for Faith Formation and Leadership, described the experience as faith-filled and community-oriented, emphasizing Bishop Brennan's words during a meal with students, “It is always great to come back home to St. John’s. Each time I come here I feel more and more at home.”

The St. John’s community members can watch a video of Bishop Brennan’s Mass and homily to continue to reflect on his powerful message of faith and leadership.
