Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville

Art Turner, director of the Office of Faith Formation, recently led a Lenten retreat focusing on the three pillars of Lent – prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, emphasizing their role in renewing the relationship with the Eucharist. The retreat, attended by about 50 individuals from various churches, aimed to help participants deepen their understanding of the Eucharist and its significance in their spiritual lives.

During the retreat, Turner prompted attendees to reflect on their engagement with the prayers at Mass, highlighting the importance of attentiveness. He shared a personal anecdote, reminiscing, "Going to Mass as a child, my mother would nudge me and say, this is important." Turner stressed the significance of preparation leading up to the reception of the Eucharist, noting that everything during Mass culminates in that sacred moment.

Addressing the practice of fasting as a form of spiritual preparation for receiving the Eucharist, Turner offered insights into its symbolic meanings. He described fasting as a sacrificial act, a means of self-discovery akin to Christ's experience in the wilderness, and a way to empathize with the plight of the less fortunate. Turner urged participants to view fasting as an opportunity for personal growth and solidarity with the marginalized.

Regarding almsgiving, Turner underscored the concept of gratitude and its role in giving back. He emphasized the connection between the Eucharist and thanksgiving, questioning, "Am I grateful enough for my relationship with Christ to give from my heart, without strings attached?" Turner encouraged individuals to practice almsgiving not merely through material donations but by establishing meaningful relationships with those in need.

In conclusion, Turner challenged participants to embody the spirit of Lent by approaching fasting and almsgiving as acts of empathy, gratitude, and genuine human connection. He posed a thought-provoking question, asking, "Am I grateful enough to see Christ in them?" The retreat served as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of embracing the Eucharist during the Lenten season.
