Facing the storms that come with battling cancer is tough for any patient and their loved ones, and that is especially so when a child is stricken. As Sarah Johnson struggles with cancer, Mater Dolorosa School and Church in Independence and the surrounding community have rallied around her as she fights the disease with courage and hope.
Sarah's mother, Tina Johnson, recounted the heartbreaking moment when the doctor delivered the devastating news of Sarah's leukemia diagnosis, stating, "(The doctor closed the door), and it was just me and my mom. He said, ‘At the moment her white blood cell count is normal. Her red blood count is normal, but her platelets are extremely high. It looks like leukemia.’”
Despite the challenges Sarah faced, the community and her family stood by her side. Tina expressed her gratitude for the support they received, saying, "He was there in 20 minutes and was at Sarah’s bedside and praying with us. I’m thankful for that." She also highlighted the incredible care and support they found at St. Jude Research Children’s Hospital in Memphis, describing it as “one of the happiest, saddest places on Earth.”
Throughout her journey, Sarah has shown remarkable resilience and positivity. Tina shared, "She had an absolute blast. Her classmates and other students in the school are always so excited to see Sarah. They all want to tell her ‘Hello.’ It is very moving." Despite the challenges posed by her treatments, Sarah has been able to keep up with her academics and even enjoy outdoor activities when her health allows.
As Sarah continues her battle against cancer, her family remains hopeful, buoyed by the ongoing support from their community and the exceptional care provided by St. Jude. Tina emphasized the importance of this support, stating, "Sarah has complications of pancreatitis, for the next three years she will be traveling back and forth between Memphis and Baton Rouge for treatments. But Sarah and her family are full of hope."
In a message of encouragement to other children fighting cancer, Sarah shared, “Mother Mary is praying for you and Jesus is watching over you.” The outpouring of love and support surrounding Sarah serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the power of community in times of adversity.
