Abortions continue to be a prevalent issue in Nebraska, particularly in the cities of Lincoln, Omaha, and Bellevue. According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, a total of 2,547 abortions were reported in 2022. Lisa McInerney, program director for Sidewalk Advocates for Life – Lincoln, acknowledges the devastating impact this has on both the diocese and the state.

"The destruction of life in a mother's womb is the first cause of death in the United States and in the world. But we know it is also the largest cause of spiritual death, with a multiplier effect," McInerney stated.

This "multiplier effect" refers to the way personal sins not only affect the individual but also those around them. When an abortionist takes the life of an innocent unborn child, it not only affects their own soul but also impacts the relationships of their family and friends. The mother of the child, whether she chose the abortion or was forced into it, also carries the weight of sin on her soul, which can lead to post-abortion syndrome and various mental health struggles.

Furthermore, men who are involved in the decision-making process surrounding abortion, whether through coercion or support, also experience the effects of this tragedy. McInerney emphasized, "Other people are affected when it is their grandchildren, siblings, nieces, or nephews who have lost their lives."

Recognizing the profound impact of abortion on the community, pro-life advocates are calling on all Catholics to participate in two initiatives: 40 Days for Life and Sidewalk Advocates for Life. These organizations aim to save lives and souls through prayer, advocacy, and support.

40 Days for Life, a national outreach campaign, is currently underway in Lincoln until March 24. Participants gather outside the Planned Parenthood abortion location daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., engaging in peaceful vigils and prayer. Catherine Turner, the local leader of 40 Days for Life, highlighted the importance of communal prayer, stating, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

Sidewalk Advocates for Life is planning a training session on March 16 to equip volunteers with the necessary skills to approach women in need with kindness and offer alternatives to abortion. McInerney emphasized the need for more volunteers, stating, "Sidewalk Advocates for Life needs more volunteers who are willing to sacrifice their time to ensure every Planned Parenthood client knows there are better healthcare options for them, and a community that wants to support them."

The goal is to have trained advocates and prayer partners present at both driveways leading to Planned Parenthood in Lincoln, offering help and information to clients. However, there is currently a shortage of volunteers to cover all of the abortion facility's business hours. As the Planned Parenthood facility in Omaha undergoes construction, the Lincoln location is expected to see an increase in clients.

McInerney encouraged individuals to participate in the training, even if their schedules may not permit them to be present during Planned Parenthood's business hours. She emphasized the importance of being prepared to support friends, family, or acquaintances who may face unexpected pregnancies, stating, "You never know when a member of your family, or a friend or acquaintance, will face an unexpected pregnancy."

Sidewalk Advocates for Life is not limited to physical sidewalks but extends to online platforms as well. The organization can direct advocates to social media groups where women in need regularly seek help. McInerney stressed that the need for volunteers goes beyond the training session, urging individuals to keep the organization in mind when they encounter someone facing an unexpected pregnancy.

In conclusion, the efforts of volunteers in praying, advocating, and providing support are crucial in the fight against abortion. The spiritual and emotional impact of abortion reaches far beyond the individuals directly involved, affecting families, friends, and the community as a whole. By participating in initiatives like 40 Days for Life and Sidewalk Advocates for Life, individuals can make a significant difference in saving lives and souls. As Pope Benedict XVI once said, "The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness."
