The U.S. Supreme Court has announced that it will be taking up the case of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). Instituted in 2012 by executive order, DACA provides temporary work permits to teenagers and young adults who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children. This decision has far-reaching implications for nearly 700,000 individuals who have grown up in the United States and have become integral members of our society.

As the debate surrounding DACA centers on the role and limits of executive authority, it is important to remember the human aspect of this issue. Bishop Robert J. Brennan, along with his fellow bishops, has called for comprehensive U.S. immigration reform that takes into account the dignity and worth of those impacted by this program.

Bishop Brennan emphasizes the need for compassion and understanding in our decision-making process. He states, "No good purpose is served by turning away these 'Dreamers,' destroying families, and belatedly taking away the opportunity for them to continue to live the American Dream." These individuals have already become an integral part of our country, contributing as students, employees, parents, and even soldiers.

The bishop reminds us of the importance of recognizing the presence of Christ in all those we help, especially the most vulnerable. He calls on all parties in Congress and the Executive branch to find a timely, fair, and workable solution that respects the inherent worth of those impacted by DACA.

In conclusion, the upcoming Supreme Court hearing on the DACA program brings to light the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform. The decision reached will have a profound impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals who have grown up in the United States. Bishop Brennan's call for compassion and a solution that upholds the dignity of all individuals involved resonates with the core values of our nation. It is our hope that the outcome of this case will be one that reflects these principles and ensures a fair and just resolution for the "Dreamers."
