Brother David Paz, one of the 13 Religious Brothers in the Diocese of Tucson, is celebrating 45 years of consecrated life with the Franciscans. In an interview with the New Outlook, Brother David shared his journey to becoming a Religious Brother and the joy and challenges he has experienced in his vocation.
Explaining the vocation of a Religious Brother, Brother David said, "The vocation of Religious Brother is a vocation for men to the consecrated life, distinct from priesthood. 'Consecrated' means 'dedicated to God.' A Brother lives a consecrated life by living a rule of life for his particular Order or Congregation and finalized, or made permanent, by vows or promises."
Contrary to the misconception that religious life is boring, Brother David emphasized that it is a life filled with both joy and challenges. He quoted John 10:10 in the Bible, stating that Jesus came to give us life in abundance. Brother David shared, "I've gone places and met people I never even dreamed of before I became a Franciscan. I've grown as a person and all because of what Jesus offers me."
Reflecting on his own journey to religious life, Brother David revealed that he initially had different plans for his life. He said, "While I was growing up, through my teen years, and even as a young adult, I always assumed I would get married and one day have a family of my own." However, he felt a yearning for something more and a deeper sense of purpose in his daily life. After making a retreat and feeling a strong calling from God, Brother David chose to follow his heart and joined the Franciscan Order.
Brother David's vocation as a Religious Brother has led him to serve as a missionary in various places. He has spent time among the Tohono O'odham, in the Peruvian Amazon, Guatemala, Mexico, and on the Mescalero Apache reservation. Describing his daily life as a Religious Brother, Brother David acknowledged that there is no typical day. He emphasized that his life is structured around a routine of prayer and that interruptions are part of his ministry.
Addressing those who are discerning their vocation, Brother David offered four main tips: do not be afraid, study and practice your faith, embrace your baptismal promises, and spend quiet time with the Lord regularly. He also highlighted the importance of valuing all vocations and creating communities of faith that inspire vocations to religious life.
In conclusion, Brother David Paz's witness and vocation of missionary consecrated life serve as an inspiration to others. His 45 years of dedication to the Franciscan Order highlight the joy and challenges that come with a life dedicated to God. As we approach World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life, let us remember and pray for all those who have answered the call to consecrated life.
