The Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, commemorated the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Sea on Sunday by offering a special prayer online.
“Today is the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Sea, also known as National Maritime Day,” the diocese posted on social media. “This day is an opportunity to recognize the hardworking men and women of the U.S. Merchant Marine, seafarers, fishers, port personnel, and all who work or travel on the high seas for the vital services they provide in support of our nation's economic well-being and national security.”
It then provided the text of the Mariner’s Prayer, and reminded parishioners that one of its churches, St. Mary, Star of the Sea Parish, has a memorial to those lost at sea.
The annual remembrance, held May 22, provides people with the opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the service of seafaring types — whether they be Merchant Marines or fishermen — the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) said.
The Catholic Church has been involved in port ministry services since 1920, when some Scottish Catholics expressed concern about a lack of Church services aboard ships, the USCCB said. This ministry today is known as Stella Maris, and it is dedicated to reaching out to all who work on the high seas or in ports as well as their families. Stella Maris port offices provide a network of parishes for those who might not be able to maintain a relationship with their home parish due to their work.
There are more than 20 Stella Maris locations in America, including in Florida, California, Washington state, Texas, Michigan, South Carolina and New York.
